How To Choose A Builder

Recent news stories have highlighted the practices of unscrupulous builders who take advantage of customers. In the midst of these scandals, we thought it might be a good idea to provide a primer on choosing a contractor you can trust.

Do Your Research
No matter whether you're ready to begin a small remodeling project or thinking about building a new home, it's important to do your homework carefully and choose a reputable builder. The National Association of Home Builders recommends that you start by contacting your local homebuilders association and ask for a list of builders.

Choose A Licensed Builder
Make sure that anyone you are considering is a licensed builder in the State of Michigan. It's state law that all builders must be licensed.

Get Recommendations
Ask your friends and family for recommendations. Who have they directly worked with? Were they happy with the results?
If you're talking with a builder, ask for the names and phone numbers of past customers. Don't just take their word for it ... call them and ask them about their experiences.
In our next post, we'll provide some examples of questions you may want to ask.
